柯南·道尔一共写了四篇中篇、56篇短篇的福尔摩斯系列小说。开始写的两篇分别是1887年毕顿圣诞年刊的《血字的研究》,以及1890年理本科特月刊登出的《四签名》。而1891年开始在斯特兰德杂志(The Strand)上的一系列短篇小说连载,共包括《冒险史》、《回忆录》正续使福尔摩斯的受欢迎程度爆炸性的水涨船高。但直到1927年,柯南·道尔先生才再写出续集《归来记》、《新探案》等。
绝大多数的故事,是以福尔摩斯的朋友及传记作家约翰·H·华生医师的角度叙述的。只有两篇是由福尔摩斯亲自叙述、两篇是由第三人称角度撰写。
