(21). The word ″turmoil″ is quite appropriate.

(22). It is this word that some people object to and are trying to change.
一些人反对的就是这两个字,要修改的也是这两个字。
(23). But facts show that the assessment is accurate.
实践证明,这个判断是准确的。
(24). It was also inevitable that the turmoil should grow into a counter-revolutionary rebellion.
后来事态进一步发展到反革命暴乱,也是必然的。
(25). We have a number of veteran comrades, including some in the army, who are still in good health, and a number of other leading cadres who joined the revolutionary ranks in different periods.

(26). It has therefore been relatively easy to cope with the incident that has broken out.
因此,事情现在爆发,处理起来比较容易。
(27). The major difficulty in handling it has been that we have never encountered a situation in which a handful of bad people were mingled with so many young students and crowds of onlookers.

(31). In fact, we were dealing not only with people who merely could not distinguish between right and wrong, but also with a number of rebels and many persons who were the dregs of society.
实际上,对方不只是一些是非不分的群众,还有一批造反派和大量的社会渣滓。
(32). They tried to subvert our state and our Party.
他们是要颠覆我们的国家,颠覆我们的党
(33). This is the crux of the matter.
这是问题的实质。
(34). If we don’t understand this fundamental question, we shall not be clear about the nature of the incident.
不懂得这个根本问题,就是性质不清楚。
(35). I believe that if we work at it, we can win the support of the overwhelming majority of Party comrades for our assessment of the nature of the incident and for the measures we have taken to cope with it.
我相信,经过认真做工作,能取得党内绝大多数同志对定性和处理的拥护。
(36). The nature of the incident should have been obvious from the very beginning.
事情一爆发出来,就很明确。
(37). The handful of bad people had two basic slogans: overthrow the Communist Party and demolish the socialist system.
他们的根本口号主要是两个,一是要打倒共产党,一是要推翻社会主义制度。
(38). Their goal was to establish a bourgeois republic, an out-and-out vassal of the West.
他们的目的是要建立一个完全西方附庸化的资产阶级共和国。
(39). Naturally, we accepted the people’s demand for a fight against corruption.
人民要求反腐败,我们当然接受。
(40). We even had to accept as well-intentioned the so-called anti-corruption slogans of the bad individuals.
那些别有用心的人提出的所谓反腐败的口号,我们也要当好话来接受。
(41). I therefore want to express our thanks to the PLA officers and men for their handling of the rebellion.
所以,我要感谢解放军指战员用这种态度来对待暴乱事件。
(42). The losses were grievous, but they helped win the people’s sympathy and support and enabled those who had confused right and wrong to change their point of view.
尽管损失是令人痛心的,但可以赢得人民,使是非不明的人改变观点。
(43). Once these questions had been clarified, we were able to gain the initiative.
这个问题清楚了,就使我们取得了主动。
(44). It is a grievous thing that many comrades laid down their lives, but if people analyse the course of the incident objectively, they will have to admit that the PLA is the people’s own army.
虽然牺牲了许多同志非常令人痛心,但客观地分析事件的过程,人们就不得不承认,解放军是人民的子弟兵。
(45). This loss of life will also help the people understand the methods we used in the struggle.
这也有助于人民理解在这场斗争中我们所采取的方法
(46). From now on, whenever the PLA takes measures to cope with a problem it encounters, it will be able to win the people’s support.
今后解放军遇到问题,采取措施,就都可以得到人民的支持了。
(47). By the way, the men should not allow their weapons to be seized again.
这里顺便说一下,以后再不能让人把武器夺去了。
(48). In short, this was a test and you passed it.
总之,这是一个考验,考试是合格的。
(49). There are not many veteran comrades in the army, and most of the soldiers are only 18 or 20, but they are still true men of the people’s army.
虽然军队里老同志不是很多了,战士们大都是十八九岁、二十岁出头的娃娃,但他们仍然是真正的人民子弟兵。
(50). When their lives were in danger, they stood firm, not forgetting the people, the Party’s teachings or the interests of the country.
在生命危险面前,他们没有忘记人民,没有忘记党的教导,没有忘记国家利益,面对死亡毫不含糊。
(51). They went to their death unflinchingly, worthy of the title of heroes.

(52). By passing the test, I mean that the army remained an army of the people.

(55). It was by no means easy to pass this genuine political test, a test of life and death!

(56). This shows that the people’s army is truly a great wall of steel guarding the Party and the country.
