1. electrochemoluminescence (ē-lek″trō-kēm″ĭ-loo″mĭ-nes′ĕns) (ē-lek″trō-kēm″ō-loo″mĭ-nes′ĕns)The production of visible light by an electrochemical reaction in which molecules, after becoming electronically excited, release visible electromagnetic energy when they return to their relaxed state. Electrochemiluminescence is used in laboratory science as a means of measuring the concentration of specific chemicals in solution. Light-emitting molecules that commonly bind to the chemical of interest are introduced into the solution, and the amount of light given off by the “labeled” or “tagged” chemical is measured.
