In fact, while she had been away, Morris had been a frequent visitor in Washington Square, taking tea with Mrs Penniman and sitting in Doctor Sloper’s study to smoke cigars. Mrs Almond had told her sister that she was behaving foolishly.

On Saturday Catherine sent him a note. ’I don’t understand,’ she wrote. ’Morris, you are killing me!’
