(1). My friend, Herbert, has always been fat, but things got so bad recently that he decided to go on a diet.

我的朋友Herbert一直很胖，但近来事情发展得如此不妙，于是他决定控制饮食。

(2). He began his diet a week ago.

他在一星期前开始规定饮食。

(3). First of all, he wrote out a long list of all the foods, which were forbidden. The list included most of the things Herbert loves: butter, potatoes, rice, beer, milk, chocolate, and sweets.

首先，他列出一张禁食的单子，单子上大都是他喜欢吃的东西:黄油、土豆、大米、啤酒、牛奶、巧克力和糖果。

(4). Yesterday I paid him a visit.

昨天我去拜访他。

(5). I rang the bell and was not surprised to see that Herbert was still as fat as ever.

按电铃后，我毫不奇怪地发现Herbert还象以前一样胖。

(6). He led me into his room and hurriedly hid a large parcel under his desk. It was obvious that he Was very embarrassed.

他领我进了房间，急急忙忙地把一个大包藏在书桌底下，显然他感到很窘。

(7). When I asked him what he was doing, he smiled guiltily and then put the parcel on the desk.

当我问他在做什么时，他讪讪地笑笑，然后把包放在桌上。

(8). He explained that his diet was so strict that he had to reward himself occasionally.

他解释说，他的饮食规定得太严格了，因此他不得不偶尔犒赏一下自己。

(9). Then he showed me the contents of the parcel. It contained five large bars of chocolate and three bags of sweets!

后来他给我看包里的东西，里面装有五大块巧克力和三袋糖果。
