(1). Geoffrey Hampden has a large circle of friends and is very popular at parties.

(2). Everybody admires him for his fine sense of humor--everybody, that is, except his six-year-old daughter, Jenny.

大家都佩服他那妙趣横生的幽默言辞，但他六岁的女儿Jenny则不然。

(3). Recently, one of Geoffrey’s closest friends asked him to make a speech at a wedding reception.

最近，Geoffrey的一个最亲密的朋友要求他在一个婚礼的宴会上作演说。

(4). This is the sort of thing that Geoffrey loves.

这正是Geoffrey乐意干的事。

(5). He prepared the speech carefully and went to the wedding with Jenny.

他认真地准备了这次演说。并带着Jenny去参加婚礼。

(6). He had included a large number of funny stories in the speech and, of course, it was a great success.

(7). As soon as he had finished, Jenny told him she wanted to go home.

(8). Geoffrey was a little disappointed by this but he did as his daughter asked.

(9). On the way home, he asked Jenny if she had enjoyed the speech.

(10). To his surprise, she said she hadn’t.

(11). Geoffrey asked her why this was so and she told him that she did not like to see so many people laughing at him!
