(1). When the Ambassador of Escalopia returned home for lunch, his wife got a shock.
当艾思卡罗比亚的大使回家吃午饭时,他的妻子大吃一惊。
(2). He looked pale and his clothes were in a frightful state.
他看上去脸色苍白,浑身衣服脏乱不堪。
(3). ’What has happened?’ she asked. ’How did your clothes get into such a mess?’
“出什么事啦?”她问道,“你的衣服怎么弄成这个样子?”
(4). ’A fire-extinguisher, my dear,’ answered the Ambassador drily.
“亲爱的,是一只灭火器。”大使冷冰冰地问答。
(5). ‘Good heaven!’ exclaimed his wife. ‘And where were you at the time?’
“天哪!”她妻子喊道,“你当时在什么地方?”
(6). ’I was in my office as usual,’ answered the Ambassador.
“照常在办公室呀。”大使回答说。
(7). ’University students set the Embassy on fire this morning.’
一群大学生今天早晨放火烧使馆。
(8). ’The fire broke out in the basement. I went down immediately. Of course, and that fool, Horst, aimed a fire extinguisher at me. He thought I was on fire. I must definitely get that fellow posted.’
地下室起了火,我当然立即下去了,可是那个蠢货Horst以为我身上着了火,拿着灭火器对我乱喷,我非得整整那个家伙不可。
(9). The Ambassador’s wife went on asking questions, when she suddenly noticed a big hole in her husband’s hat.
大使夫人继续问时,突然发现她丈夫的帽子上有一个大窟隆。
(10). ’And how can you explain that?’ she asked.
“那你怎么解释这个呢?”她问。
(11). ’Oh, that,’ said the Ambassador. ’Someone fired a shot through my office window. Accurate, don’t you think? Fortunately, I wasn’t wearing it at the time. If I had been, I would not have been able to get home for lunch.’
“啊,这个”大使说,“有人从窗外向我放了一枪,打得很准,是吗?幸亏那时我没戴它。否则,我不能回家吃午饭啦。”
